Sports Digital Media Growth Slows In August, But Consumption Jumps

The nearly year-long run of growth for the sports digital media category slowed in August according to monthly comScore rankings of multiplatform digital reach. The sports category during the month generated an audience of 178.3 million, down slightly from 178.8 million in July and 178.9 million in August of ’17. However, consumption improved as the August ’18 figure of 101.7 minutes per user topped both the 91.4 minutes in July and the 94.0 minutes during August of ’17, and was the highest consumption figure for the category since April. ESPN again led the category last month with a reach total of 70.2 million unique visitors, and an overall consumption total of 4.4 billion minutes. MLB led all entrants with a per-visitor average of 73.5 minutes, the second-best total for any individual entity this year behind ESPN’s 77.2 minutes per user in March. MLB’s figure was fueled in large part by 1.77 billion total minutes for the MLB.com At Bat mobile app, its best-ever U.S. total in a single month.
