Devils May See $5M Windfall From New Gambling Partnerships

Devils President Hugh Weber said that the team will probably bring in around $5M from "various marketing partnerships with a multitude of different players" in the sports gambling space. Appearing on Bloomberg TV, Weber said, "They are looking to get engaged with our fans. We have a high affinity of brand, of our logos and marks, and obviously being in Jersey, and the only team in New Jersey, gives us an advantage." Weber said the Supreme Court's decision to open up sports gambling has "put the leagues in a position where they have to react." Weber: "Sports betting is additive to the experience for our fans, so there's a lot on the horizon." Meanwhile, Weber noted that 70% of NHLers and 40% of the team's social following are from "outside the U.S." Weber: "We're doing things like foreign language social media, being able to speak to fans in their language." Weber said the Devils playing their first regular-season game against the Oilers in Sweden is "another outreach for us to go global." Weber noted the "long-term tradeoffs" of the 12 games the Devils will play outside of the U.S. this season are worth "afternoon starts." He added, "There is some financial impact for us in terms of how those fans might not buy beer here at one o'clock in the afternoon, but ... we can now get to sponsors that might be in Sweden, Switzerland and other places" (BLOOMBERG.com, 9/17).
