Florida State Gets Approval For Standalone Football Practice Facility

A stand-alone football practice facility at Florida State is "officially on the way" after school officials formally announced the $60M facility as "part of the school's Unconquered Campaign," according to Curt Weiler of the TALLAHASSEE DEMOCRAT. The Unconquered Campaign "aims to raise" $100M for FSU athletics as part of a five-year plan. The football facility "will be built next to the existing Dunlap Athletic Training Complex and will be 122,000 square feet" and include a "new team locker room, state-of-the-art training, hydrotherapy and weight rooms." It is "slated to open" in July '21. FSU football coach Willie Taggart also announced that he and his wife "will be donating" $1M toward the campaign. Another $40M "will be allocated to various other efforts across FSU athletics" (TALLAHASSEE DEMOCRAT, 9/3). In Tampa, Matt Baker noted a similar $65M project is "in the works" at the Univ. of Florida, and a $40M facility is a "major priority for USF." Since '13, "at least 17 Power Five programs have built or renovated facilities like the one FSU is building, at a combined cost" of more than $800M. A football-only facility was "one of the biggest goals for coach Jimbo Fisher during the end of his tenure," and FSU's "lack of progress there was one reason his relationship with the school soured" (TAMPA BAY TIMES, 9/3).

ON KNIGHT WATCH: In Newark, Keith Sargeant notes Rutgers BOG Chair Greg Brown, along with his wife Anna, will make a $4M donation that "will go towards the construction" of a renovated football locker room and training room in the Hale Center (NJ.com, 9/4).
