Warriors' Welts Says Chase Center Construction On Track For '19

Chase Center's roof is not expected to be fully enclosed until Novemberchase center

The Warriors' Chase Center is slated to open next year, and team President & COO Rick Welts said there is now a "sense of what the full product is going to be," according to Anthony Slater of THE ATHLETIC. Welts said, "The structure itself, it's remarkable now. The office buildings are at the full height they will be. ... It's a fun time. We're a year away." Welts said he has toured the arena "two or three times a week since we got started," and the arena "won't have the roof completely enclosed" until November. Welts: "I've never done this before, so I guess I didn't really know. But good news is, everyone who does know what they're doing in the construction says we are absolutely on time. This isn't the type of project where we can be a couple months late. We have a season to start." Asked how Chase Center will compare to the team's current practice facility in Oakland, Welts said, "There's nothing particularly different than a lot of other practices facilities, except it's in the same place that the team is going to come play their games. ... It's a thoughtful decision about how we run the Warriors, wanting to keep the basketball and business operations together in the same building." On whether public transit and street access to Chase Center is expected to be completed by next season, Welts said the Warriors are "not 100 percent sure the park will be done," as it is "not ours to construct." But, Welts said the street "will be done," and the S.F. Municipal Railway is "building a new platform" (THEATHLETIC.com, 8/30).
