Texas AD Says No Discussions With Austin MLS About Stadium Use

If they move to the city, a permanent stadium for Austin FC would not be completed until the '21 seasonPRECOURT SPORTS VENTURES

A potential MLS team Austin will "need a place to play" until a permanent stadium is completed in '21, but talks are not ongoing with either the Univ. of Texas and Triple-A PCL Round Rock Express, according to Chris Bils of the AUSTIN AMERICAN-STATESMAN. Texas AD Chris Del Conte said that there are "no discussions ongoing" about the possibility of the MLS team using either Myers or Royal-Memorial Stadium. Del Conte: "They've got to get all their stuff completely finalized before we enter any negotiations." Bils noted that leaves open the possibility for playing at Dell Diamond, home of the Express, whose front office has "been speaking" to Precourt Sports Ventures, which owns the Crew. Dell Diamond has "held Liga MX friendly matches every year" since '15. Crew Chair Anthony Precourt has "maintained a desire" to begin play in Austin next spring, which will "require season ticket information going out sooner rather than later." Merchandise has also been a "topic of conversation following the brand release" of the Austin FC name, colors and shield. Austin FC gear "isn't for sale online just yet," but the team's PR staff has been "handing out T-shirts, hats, scarves and bags for free around town." In addition to building a stadium, Austin FC will "need a place to train." The terms sheet for the proposed McKalla Place stadium says "discussions about a training site will take place before final execution of a contract" (STATESMAN.com, 8/27).

FOLLOW THE LEADER: Atlanta United Owner Arthur Blank in a Q&A said of the Crew's potential relocation from Columbus, "From what I understand, the city hasn't been as aggressive as it coulda/shoulda been to try to keep the team there. I understand the soccer fans are very disappointed. ... On the other hand, you want a community, a city, that can not only support, but help elevate not only their club but Major League Soccer to another level." Blank added, "Austin is a great emerging American city. It has great population, great demographics for soccer" (AJC.com, 8/27).
