IndyCar Awarded Nearly $4M From Failed '16 Boston Grand Prix

IndyCar claimed losses of $4.2M and had requested damages of over $4M for the cancelled racesGETTY IMAGES

IndyCar has "been awarded" nearly $4M in damages stemming from the failed '16 Boston Grand Prix, though how much it will be "able to collect from the promoter is unclear," according to Jim Ayello of the INDIANAPOLIS STAR. IndyCar was "awarded $3,926,795.48" by U.S. District Judge Tanya Walton Pratt last week in a "default judgment against defendant John Casey, who didn't respond to the lawsuit." Casey was "ruled liable for the sanction fees" for the '16 and '17 races. Casey is the former President & CEO of Boston Grand Prix, which "filed for bankruptcy" in July '16. IndyCar "claimed losses" of $4.2M for the canceled races and had "requested damages of $4,095,674.65." IndyCar CEO Mark Miles said, "We are working to determine what we might be able to collect. I cannot predict how long the process will take." Ayello noted the contract "called for races on Labor Day weekend" from '16-20, but organizers "called off the race" in April '16 (INDIANAPOLIS STAR, 8/25).
