Univ. Of Miami Football Wearing Eco-Friendly Uniforms For Opener

Miami's jerseys are orange with green sleeves, meant to represent subliminal tonal palm treesadidas

The Univ. of Miami will feature the "first-ever football uniforms made with repurposed and upcycled materials created in partnership with Parley for the Oceans" and Adidas for their Sept. 2 season opener against LSU, according to Anthony Chiang of the PALM BEACH POST. The "environmentally-conscious jerseys" feature an orange top that "includes green sleeves that are meant to represent 'subliminal tonal palm trees' to 'pay homage to South Floridian landscapes' paired with white pants." The uniform is composed of more than 70% "raw material transformed from fishing nets and other nylon waste intercepted in marine environments" (PALMBEACHPOST.com, 8/20). In Ft. Lauderdale, Christy Cabrera Chirinos noted the team will be "wearing the new uniforms in their nationally-televised opener," and the Hurricanes will "auction them off with the proceeds going toward" the Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science. This marks the "second time this month" that Miami and Adidas have "unveiled new uniforms." The team will also "wear gloves and cleats made of recycled materials," with Adidas noting it will "mark the first time eco-conscious footwear will be worn in an NCAA football game" (South Florida SUN SENTINEL, 8/21).
