DAZN Licensing Some NFL Content To Big Canadian TV Providers

Live sports streaming service DAZN this season will license NFL content to some of Canada's "big television providers to appease customers frustrated by patchy online viewing," according to Emily Jackson of the FINANCIAL POST. DAZN signed deals with BCE, Rogers Communications, Shaw Communications and SaskTel to "distribute NFL Sunday Ticket for the upcoming season." A DAZN spokesperson said that those providers can "further sub-license the content to other providers." They added that Bell "already has a deal" with Telus. But DAZN is still the "only place to watch every single NFL game as it will retain exclusive rights for RedZone content." DAZN kicked off its time in Canada with "technical issues, such as choppy sound and buffering video, leaving devoted fans demanding their old cable service and NFL executives apologizing for inadequate service." DAZN signed a "few licensing deals with cable providers last year to appease fans, and added more TV providers this season" (FINANCIALPOST.com, 8/8). At the conclusion of the NFL's annual meeting this past March, NFL Exec VP/Int'l Mark Waller said that "sub-licensing would continue" in '18. However, in Toronto, John Kryk notes both the NFL and DAZN had been "subsequently silent on the issue" (TORONTO SUN, 8/9).
