DC United has "finalized changes to its investment group," identifying six American stakeholders in Championship club Swansea City and one other U.S. businessman to "finance the MLS organization," according to Steven Goff of the WASHINGTON POST. DC United Managing Partner & CEO Jason Levien will "continue to control United's voting shares in the league and remain the face of the club's business operations." Levien "bought out" DC UNited's primary investor, Mahaka Group Founder Erick Thohir, earlier this summer, and teamed with Grizzlies Minority Owner Steve Kaplan to "form controlling interest." Thohir had "considered retaining a small share" in the team, but "decided to divest completely." Financial details of the club's "ownership shift" were not disclosed. Other than Kaplan, the new investors include former real estate exec Al Tylis; PAR Capital Management Partner Ed Shapiro; former NBA Kings & MLB Rangers Owner Robert Hernreich; Chiron Investments CEO Romie Chaudhari; and former NorthStar Asset Management CEO Daniel Gilbert (not related to Cavaliers Owner Dan Gilbert). Gilbert is the only investor "not involved" with Swansea City (WASHINGTON POST, 8/8).
