Tiger-Phil Matchup Set For Thanksgiving Weekend In Vegas

The Woods-Mickelson faceoff was reportedly arranged by representatives of both players and CAAGETTY IMAGES

The head-to-head matchup between Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson is "officially set" for Thanksgiving weekend in Las Vegas, according to sources cited by ESPN's Mike Greenberg. Woods and Mickelson will face-off at Shadow Creek Golf Course on either Friday, Nov. 23, or Saturday, Nov. 24. The event was "arranged by representatives of both players and CAA." It was reported last month the event would be a $10M winner-take-all match, but the purse is "still being determined." Greenberg notes the match is something "a lot of old-time golf fans are looking forward to seeing." ESPN's Laura Rutledge added the match is "going to be awesome to watch for golf fans and people who ...  maybe aren't golf fans and maybe don't even know Tiger as well." ESPN's Mark Teixeira said, "Hopefully young fans will get brought to this game." ESPN's Michael Collins said, "I love the idea of this match between the two of them, but for me they have to put up some of their own money. ... The fact is if Tiger has to hand Phil $2M of his own money, the money's not going to hurt but knowing Phil's going to be talking smack forever or vice versa" ("Get Up!," ESPN, 8/2). FS1's Chris Broussard: "I just love the idea of this. I want to see more of these going forward in golf. ... This is tremendous marketing." FS1's Doug Gottlieb added the match "brings attention to golf and I'm all for it" ("First Things First," FS1, 8/2).
