NFL Books Wembley For Game In Case Tottenham Venue Not Ready

Tottenham has received US$13.1M from the NFL for the cost of installing a retractable, synthetic pitchGETTY IMAGES

The NFL has "secured an option" to move the Oct. 14 Seahawks-Raiders game from the new Tottenham Hotspur Stadium to Wembley Stadium if there are "delays completing" the Tottenham venue, according to Matt Hughes of the LONDON TIMES. Ticket sales for the game have been "put on hold" until after testing events at the stadium have "taken place." The NFL will "not begin selling tickets" for the game until Sept. 4. Tickets for two games to be "staged at Wembley later that month sold out months ago." Tottenham has "already moved" one of next season's EPL home games to Wembley and "reached an agreement" with the NFL where three of their opening four matches of the season will be away games. Tottenham is confident that its stadium "will be ready" in time for them to "fulfill that commitment and have arranged a number of test events," which will be played in front of a limited capacity crowd in the build-up to the game. The NFL has contributed US$13.1M to the "cost of installing a retractable, synthetic pitch" at the stadium. Moving the game could lead to the NFL "demanding compensation from Tottenham" (LONDON TIMES, 7/27).
