Media Notes

The WALL STREET JOURNAL's Lukas Alpert notes the N.Y. Daily News announced yesterday that it would "cut its editorial staff by half as part of a major restructuring" and among the "hardest hit departments" was the sports desk (WALL STREET JOURNAL, 7/24). In N.Y., Keith Kelly notes the Daily News' sports department "shrank from 34 staffers to nine." Among those "let go were veteran Knicks and NBA reporter Frank Isola, 25-year veteran baseball columnist John Harper, writer Peter Botte and Yankees beat writer Mike Mazzeo" (N.Y. POST, 7/24).

SMART FIX? AWFUL ANNOUNCING's Matt Yoder noted ESPN is reportedly "considering adding a rotating guest host" to its morning show "Get Up!" that would join Mike Greenberg, Michelle Beadle, and Jalen Rose for "one day a week." Yoder: "Is this really an answer for Get Up?" It is "hard to project at this point, but the addition of additional cast members really didn’t do much" for "Mike & Mike." The challenge "just might be for ESPN to find five separate individuals who could pull this off and really add a new element to the show" (AWFULANNOUNCING.com, 7/20).

WON'T BACK DOWN: In Pennsylvania, Bob Flounders notes Matt Millen serves as an analyst on the Big Ten Network and for Raiders preseason games, and he will call Raiders-Seahawks on Aug. 30 in Seattle, and then "catch a red-eye flight" back east for Appalachian State-Penn State on Sept. 1. This as Millen has been "battling a disease that will require a heart transplant" (PENNLIVE.com, 7/24).
