A's Hope Opening Of Mount Davis Leads To Rare Sellout At Coliseum

Mount Davis, which can seat 8,190 fans, has been closed during games since the end of the '05 seasonGETTY IMAGES

The A’s "will open" their Mount Davis seating section for the first time in 13 years for Saturday’s game against the Giants, and the team "hopes to set a Coliseum attendance record for a baseball game," according to Susan Slusser of the S.F. CHRONICLE. Adding as many as 8,190 fans Saturday "will bring the capacity to 56,782." The baseball attendance record is 55,989 for a "game against the Giants" in '04. Saturday’s game also "will feature a reunion" of the '89 World Series championship team. Mount Davis will "not be open for the Friday and Sunday games against the Giants, although sellouts are possible those dates." Mount Davis has been "closed during baseball games" since the end of the '05 season. Tarps "were left off the area during the April 17 free game in case demand called for it, but the section was not needed" (S.F. CHRONICLE, 7/17). In San Jose, Martin Gallegos notes regardless of how many people show up, the opening of the section "does allow for a more affordable baseball experience." Tickets for Mount Davis "will be sold for just $10, and fans who have tickets in the deck will have access to $2 hot dogs, nachos, peanuts, bottled water and soda." The A’s "made sure to point out that most seats in Mount Davis come with an obstructed view." Due to being so high up, the seats do "not have a full view of the deepest parts of the outfield" (San Jose MERCURY NEWS, 7/17). NBC Sports Bay Area's Ray Ratto noted the seats in Mount Davis are "angled in such a way you can't see the outfield." Ratto: "They tarped the third deck off because nobody was ever going there except for seagulls. Mount Davis is a bad place to watch baseball, that's the problem" ("The Happy Hour," NBC Sports Bay Area, 7/16).
