In Detroit, David Jesse notes the FBI is looking into whether Eastern Michigan's athletic program "discriminated against female athletes by not offering enough opportunities for them." The investigation began with a "complaint filed with the federal Office of Civil Rights in late April, about a month after Eastern announced it would be cutting four sports." Programs cut were "women's softball, men’s swimming and diving, men's wrestling and women’s tennis" (DETROIT FREE PRESS, 7/11).
CARD SHUFFLING: In Louisville, Tim Sullivan notes efforts to "enhance ice hockey’s place" at Louisville are "still in the thin-ice stage." UL administrators yesterday met with a delegation "aiming at the same goal" to bring D-I hockey to the university. Adding the sport would be a "draw for out-of-state students" (Louisville COURIER-JOURNAL, 7/11).
BRING IT BACK? In San Antonio, Fares Sabawi noted Mayor Ron Nirenberg, along with officials from UTSA and the Univ. of Incarnate Word, were in Boston yesterday to "make their pitch" to the NCAA committee about hosting another Final Four. The group is "competing to host" the men's tournament in '23, '25 and '26. San Antonio is "competing with other big cities" like Detroit, Houston, Indianapolis, the Dallas-Ft. Worth area and Phoenix (MYSANANTONIO.com, 7/10).
