FS Midwest Sponsor Gets Unexpected Plug From Bob Costas

Illinois-based waterproofing company Helitech got an unexpected pop of publicity during FS Midwest's coverage of Indians-Cardinals, as Bob Costas talked up the company during a "long rain delay before the game," according to Dan Caesar of the ST. LOUIS POST-DISPATCH. Costas, a St. Louis native, was honored by the Cardinals for winning the Ford Frick Award and was "scheduled to appear briefly on the Cards' radio and TV broadcasts." During his spot with FS Midwest's Dan McLaughlin, Costas noted the "rain-delay programming was sponsored by Helitech." He asked, "Does Helitech only get some publicity when it rains?” McLaughlin: “Typically, yes.” Costas: “And I get it because they’re a waterproofing company, Helitech is. On the other hand, to have to root for rain so that you can advertise your service is sort of a strange place to be in.” McLaughlin: “Let’s make sure all the bosses at Fox Sports Midwest realize that was Bob Costas.” Costas: “I’m just saying, it’s just an observation. And really, if I spring a leak in my roof, I am calling Helitech. There’s no question I’m calling Helitech. At the slightest sign of precipitation -- the first drop -- I’m calling Helitech.” Caesar notes McLaughlin then suggested that Costas will be "getting a check from Helitech for the plug." McLaughlin said of the exchange, "Never, in my wildest imagination, did I think I’d be talking about potential waterproofing issues with Bob Costas, but we had fun with it. He has such a great sense of humor and I would like to think that (the Helitech people) are beyond thrilled to have one of the greatest broadcasters in history talk about their product" (ST. LOUIS POST-DISPATCH, 6/29).
