League Notes

In Dallas, Adam Grosbard noted the conversation around the "gender pay disparity in basketball has picked up steam in recent months," and the issue "could come to a head" following the '19 season. That is when the WNBPA can opt out of the current CBA and "begin negotiating a new one." Wings G Skylar Diggins-Smith said, "All 144 players have a seat at the table at this next collective bargaining agreement. I think it's just about us prioritizing and getting this information out to us in layman's terms and just continuing to be advocates for women, women's rights and gender parity" (DALLASNEWS.com, 6/26).

MAKE IT HAPPEN: In Austin, Kirk Bohls writes he would "like to see" the Crew move to the city because it would "provide yet another outlet of entertainment and service for Austin." While there are "no guarantees Central Texas will support" an MLS team, it is "worth a try to see, especially on an under-utilized, ignored toxic dump site that no one wanted to develop" in the McKalla Place site. This "could be Austin’s only chance" for a pro team, as the city "ain’t ever landing an NFL or NBA team and probably not" an MLB franchise (AUSTIN AMERICAN-STATESMAN, 6/28).

MODEL CITIZENS: In Las Vegas, Ron Kantowski notes the NHL went the entire '16-17 season "without having one of its players, coaches or Zamboni drivers running afoul of the law." It shows that hockey players "simply don’t get into trouble as often as their contemporaries in other sports." There actually was "one more mascot arrested than NHL player" in '17 (LAS VEGAS REVIEW-JOURNAL, 6/28).
