Royals' Attendance Down 27% With Team On Pace For 110-Loss Season

The Royals currently have the second-worst record in MLB at 25-55, and attendance at Kauffman Stadium this season is "headed for its worst result" since '10, according to James Dornbrook of the K.C. BUSINESS JOURNAL. The average per game crowd as of Sunday "has dropped to 20,341," down 27% compared to last year. It is a "far cry from the franchise record average attendance of 33,348" in '15, when the Royals won the World Series, but "closer to more historical averages for the team." However, the Royals "aren't getting disheartened." The organization's management "pointed to early-season bad weather as having a big role in dampening attendance." Team officials also "expected to see a decline as they rebuild the team, and remain confident they now have a proven formula to once again build a contender." While the overall numbers "may be down, the Royals have been finding success in group sales," offering a 20% "discount for groups of 20 or more." The Royals said that its sales team is "seeing solid results and keeping the premium seats and suites filled." Additionally, the club "expects to have strong ticket sales for upcoming series" against the Red Sox, Cubs and Cardinals. The Royals added that sponsors have been "sticking with the team" despite the attendance decline (BIZJOURNALS.com, 6/27).
