Rice, Olympians Highlight Fourth Annual KPMG Women's Summit

Rice spoke about the importance of finding a mentor and of keeping a sense of perspectiveGETTY IMAGES

Former U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice again served as the keynote speaker at the KPMG Women’s Leadership Summit at Kemper Lakes Golf Club in suburban Chicago, site of this week's KPMG Women’s PGA Championship. This was the fourth annual summit sponsored by KPMG, with Rice involved in each one. KPMG CEO Lynne Doughtie opened the summit, followed by a panel featuring Rice in an interview moderated by NBC’s Michele Tafoya. Rice spoke about the importance of finding a mentor and of keeping a sense of perspective in the face of a crisis. “There are always worse circumstances,” she said in front of a crowd of more than 200 women as she recounted her roles both as Secretary of State and as Stanford Provost. Rice also outlined three key principles in team building, including a need to “have people to make up for your deficiencies“ while also finding “people who share your values” and “having truth tellers among you.” Another panel titled "Resilience & Grit: The Making of a Champion” featuring Olympic figure skaters Nancy Kerrigan and Maia Shibutani and U.S. women's hockey player Hilary Knight. One session featured author and motivational speaker Dan Pink, while Aramark President, Chair & CEO Eric Foss and Johnson & Johnson Chair & CEO Alex Gorsky spoke on “The Business Case for Diversity & Inclusion” panel. Jennifer Morgan, SAP President of Americas and Asia Pacific & Japan, and Accenture North America CEO Julie Sweet were featured in a “Your Path to the C-Suite” panel, while retired U.S. Navy Admiral Michelle Howard closed the summit with a “Fireside Chat” keynote address.
