Golden Knights Owner Foley Talks Team's Success In Year 1

Early success by the Golden Knights may have helped Las Vegas' chances to host a future All-Star GameGETTY IMAGES

The Golden Knights' first season in the NHL far transcended Owner Bill Foley's expectations, and after winning a division championship and earning a spot in the Stanley Cup Final, he said that his long-term plan for success has "moved up," according to a Q&A with Greg Wyshynski of ESPN.com. Foley said the team has a "lot of cap space" and can "do some things" in free agency. But Foley said they are "all going to be things that are done within the concept of the team. Not doing something that's going to foul up the way these guys are together." Asked about going on a shopping spree in free agency, Foley said, "We're not doing that. We have to worry about what we're going to do in two years, three years and down the road." On Las Vegas eventually hosting an NHL All-Star Game, Foley said, "It's really a matter of ... we have the collective bargaining agreement renegotiation coming up in 2019. I would say it would be after that, maybe 2022 or 2023. We need some time to get organized. It's a big job to put on an All-Star Game." Foley also address the team's trademark dispute with the Army, saying, "We're fine. As I understand it, the matter is now going to the Secretary of the Army" (ESPN.com, 6/25).
