Hurricanes, Coyotes Among Teams To Unveil Third Jerseys For '18-19

NHL third jerseys are "making a comeback" for the '18-19 season after a one-year hiatus due to the league's changeover from Reebok to Adidas, and the Hurricanes are "using theirs to more fully live up to their team name," according to Paul Lukas of ESPN.com. The team unveiled its new alternate uniform this weekend, and it features a logo "showing two square flags -- the symbol for a hurricane warning -- anchored to a hockey stick." The uniform design, which is "black with red stripes and a dark-gray shoulder yoke, was created by the Hurricanes' in-house creative team, not by Adidas." The unveiling also "includes a new 'Canes' wordmark -- with the two-flag warning symbol incorporated into the 'C' -- that will appear on the team's helmets this season." Lukas gave the new design an "A" grade, as it is "very solid" and is an "improvement over the team's previous alternate uni" (ESPN.com, 6/22). In Raleigh, Chip Alexander noted the "Take Warning" jersey has a "hurricane warning logo, and also has the North Carolina state flag on ghosted patches and ghosted warning flags on the inside collar" (Raleigh NEWS & OBSERVER, 6/23).

BACK TO THEIR ROOTS: In Phoenix, Richard Morin noted the Coyotes' original black "Kachina" sweaters will be "returning as regular third jerseys" in '18-19. The jerseys, which "debuted upon the franchise's relocation to Phoenix" prior to the '96-97 season, will be "worn for all 13 Coyotes Saturday home games." The Coyotes are "calling these Saturday games at Gila River Arena as 'Kachina Saturdays'" and have dubbed the Nov. 23 game against the Avalanche as "Black Friday." Coyotes COO Ahron Cohen said that there will be "no aesthetic changes to the jerseys from their original design." The only difference will be the "new, lighter jersey material" provided by Adidas. Cohen said, "It's just such a cool, classic and iconic jersey." Cohen said it was a "unanimous" decision to bring the original sweaters back (ARIZONA REPUBLIC, 6/23).
