ADs In The News: St. John's Goff Resigns; Holder Extends At OK State

St. John's AD Anton Goff announced his "immediate resignation Friday afternoon, citing family reasons for his departure from campus." In N.Y., Kevin Armstrong noted Goff previously "served in the same position" at the Univ. of Hartford. St. Johns Associate VP/Athletics and Senior Woman Administrator Kathleen Meehan will serve as interim AD. St. John’s will immediately "commence a national search for this position with an executive search firm" (N.Y. DAILY NEWS, 6/23).

LEADING THE WAY: Washington State AD Pat Chun said the significance is "not lost" on him of being the first Asian-American AD at a Power Five school. He said, "When you start getting more involved, then it hits you: ‘Wow, no one really looks like you.’ You never really quantify these things until you start competing for jobs and you’re trying to get to different levels of your career. It’s like, ‘Wow.’ It does hit you." In DC, Gene Wang notes Chun is "scheduled to address other Asian American administrators" during NACDA's annual convention later this month. Chun: "It means a little bit more because I don’t know the world my daughters are going to grow up in. But I know as the world changes, and there’s more equality in society and more acceptance of different races and genders, I think it’s cool that something that may have been perceived as a glass ceiling to some Asians no longer exists" (WASHINGTON POST, 6/23).

WHERE CREDIT IS DUE: In Oklahoma City, Nathan Ruiz notes the Oklahoma State Board of Regents has "approved a three-year contract extension" for AD Mike Holder. Holder will be "paid $950,000 each year of the deal, which runs from July 1 of this year to June 30, 2021." Holder "made $640,000 this past school year." It is believed Holder's successor as AD is "already on campus" in Deputy AD Chad Weiberg, an OSU alumnus hired in May '17, though Holder has "yet to express an interest in retiring" (NEWSOK.com, 6/22). OSU President Burns Hargis said that Holder’s salary has been "well below market for years" and added that Holder was responsible for "improvements in facilities and performance of athletes" (AP, 6/23).

TALK TO ME: Alabama AD Greg Byrne on Saturday said that he would "host three lunches" with groups of fans who expressed interest on Twitter. ELEVEN WARRIORS' Dan Hope noted the contest "opens up a rare opportunity for fans to have the chance to sit down and get to know" Byrne (ELEVENWARRIORS.com, 6/23).
