Colonial Athletic Association's Men's Hoops Tourney Moving To DC In '20

CAA's agreement runs through '22 and brings the tourney back to the DC area for the first time since '86CAA BASKETBALL

The '20 Colonial Athletic Association men's basketball tournament has become the "first college sports event scheduled" for the new 4,200-seat arena in DC slated to host the WNBA Mystics and the G League Capital City Go-Go, according to Gene Wang of the WASHINGTON POST. The three-year deal runs through '22 and "brings the CAA men’s basketball tournament back" to the DC area for the first time since '86. The CAA tourney in '19 will be held at North Charleston Coliseum, where "it’s been contested" since '17. South Carolina was the "first state other than Virginia or Maryland to host the tournament" (WASHINGTON POST, 6/19). In Baltimore, Katherine Fominykh notes the CAA hopes that DC "serves as an accessible midpoint for its teams." Charleston as a tourney host "drew more fans" than Baltimore's Royal Farms Arena did from '14-16, pulling 21,247 in '17 and 21,941 in '18 in its "approximately 11,000-seat arena." In both years, the final "featured the College of Charleston, which more than likely boosted the site’s attendance" (BALTIMORE SUN, 6/19).
