Broadcasters Jim Gray, Steve Albert Inducted Into Int'l Boxing HOF

Broadcaster JIM GRAY and former announcer STEVE ALBERT yesterday were inducted into the Int'l Boxing HOF "in the observer category," according to the AP. Among the others inducted were boxers VITALI KLITSCHKOERIK MORALESRONALD WRIGHTSID TERRIS and promoter KLAUS-PETER KOHL. Gray, a "veteran of more than 700 championship bouts" as part of Showtime's broadcast team, was "introduced" by MIKE TYSON at the ceremony in Canastota, N.Y. Tyson sobbed during the intro, saying, "This award is way, way overdue. I'm very proud of you. Well-deserved." Gray "added a dash of humor as he spoke." Gray: "It's ironic. The man who threatened to kill me in public is now inducting me into the Hall of Fame" (AP, 6/10). In N.Y., Matt Hauswirth notes Canastota "rolls out the red carpet for the stars" of boxing. The event "began with a parade through the streets" and ended at the stage (CNYCENTRAL.com, 6/11). Also spotted at the induction were DEAN SPANOS, MARK DAVIS, JERRY RICHARDSON, HUMPY WHEELER, BOB COSTAS, JULIUS ERVING, CHARLIE BESSER and LARRY FITZGERALD (THE DAILY).
