Audience Analysis: U.S. Women's Open Struggling Over Last Two Years

Fox last Sunday finished with 878,000 viewers for the final round of the U.S. Women’s Open, marking the golf event’s second-lowest figure on record (dating back to ’95). That is up from last year’s record low of 790,000 viewers. Thai golfer Ariya Jutanugarn, who held a 7-shot lead with 9 holes to play, defeated South Korea’s Kim Hyo-joo in a playoff this year. Last year, South Korea’s Park Sung-hyun won by two strokes, as eight South Koreans finished in the top 10. This year’s event was also moved to early June after a mid-July date last year.

NOTES: ESPN ended its run with IndyCar this past weekend, with ABC carrying a doubleheader from Detroit. Sunday’s second race was up slightly from last year, but the race again failed to cross the 1 million viewer threshold (936,000 viewers)....FS1 averaged 159,000 viewers on a total-day basis last month, up 3% from May of last year, and up 26% compared to ESPN2 this past month (126,000 viewers). ESPN averaged 720,000 viewers in May for total-day audience, up 15% compared to 618,000 viewers for the same period in '17.
