Sources: Amazon Close To Securing Laver Cup Global Broadcast Rights

Amazon would broadcast the Team Europe vs. Team World competition on its Prime Video serviceGETTY IMAGES

Amazon is "believed to be close to signing a two-year broadcast deal" for global rights to the Laver Cup, according to sources cited by Max Mason of the AUSTRALIA FINANCIAL REVIEW. Amazon would broadcast the tournament that pits Team Europe against Team World "via its Prime Video service." Sources said that there are also "plans for a range of content outside the matches, including behind-the-scenes content, mini-series and viral content." Amazon has been "building a set of tennis broadcast rights over the past 12 months." The company in August beat out Sky for "exclusive rights to the ATP World Tour in the U.K. and Ireland." Amazon last month "struck a five-year deal" for rights to the U.S. Open for U.K. Prime Video subscribers. The move to secure sports is an "interesting point of differentiation for Amazon in the streaming market" (AFR.com, 5/27).
