Super Bowl LII Brought Net New Spending Of $370M To Twin Cities

The $370M figure was reached after subtracting about $80M for displaced tourism GETTY IMAGES

Super Bowl LII brought a "net new spending" of $370M to the Twin Cities for the event that lasted from Jan. 26-Feb. 4, according to an economic impact report cited in a front-page piece by Olson & Roper of the Minneapolis STAR TRIBUNE. The results, which "are in dispute," came in $50M over "pre-event projections." Much of that "larger-than-anticipated number" was attributed to $179M "spent by broadcast and event planners -- the most for a Super Bowl." The $370M figure was "reached after subtracting" about $80M for "displaced tourism (people who were kept away from the area by the event)" (Minneapolis STAR TRIBUNE, 5/30). A Minneapolis STAR TRIBUNE editorial goes with the header, "Region's Super Bowl Effort Paid Large Dividends." The amount "affirms the sense that grew during Super Bowl LII that hosting major civic and sporting events is something Minnesota knows how to do profitably and well" (Minneapolis STAR TRIBUNE, 5/30).
