LPGA Optimistic On Ann Arbor Event Despite Sponsor Questions

Volvik originally committed to a three-year deal when the tournament launchedgetty images

The future of the LPGA Volvik Championship in Ann Arbor has been "uncertain in recent months," but LPGA Commissioner Mike Whan is "optimistic the event will remain in Southeast Michigan," according to Tom Lang of the DETROIT FREE PRESS. Whan said of the event, which is being played this week, "I can’t tell you today, but I’m not concerned about the ’19 schedule including Ann Arbor." Lang notes the tourney came to Ann Arbor in '16, giving Michigan "two events on the LPGA calendar along with the Meijer LPGA Classic in Belmont." However, the tournament "might be in jeopardy since Volvik hasn't committed to staying on as title sponsor in the future." A tournament official said that there have "been talks with other sponsors this spring in case Volvik either backs out or takes on a smaller sponsorship role." Volvik committed to a "three-year deal when the tournament launched" (DETROIT FREE PRESS, 5/25). In Detroit, Matt Charboneau notes even if that agreement is "not extended, Volvik intends to be involved with the tournament and the LPGA on some level." Volvik USA President Don Shin said, "We'll be involved in some capacity, whether it's a title, co-title, or a presenting, we would definitely like to be involved with this tournament, for sure." Charboneau notes by all accounts, the tournament "has been a success." It has seen a "steady increase in attendance each year -- 35,000 spectators are expected this week ... and there are 95 corporate partners." Whan and Tournament Dir Keith Karbo said that several companies have officials "in town this week but nothing would be official until the tour announces next season’s schedule in November" (DETROIT NEWS, 5/25).
