Canadiens' Social Media Posts Take On Wittier, More Playful Tone

The Canadiens appear to be "trying to turn things around with their approach to social media," as the team's Twitter feed has "taken on a wittier, sometimes snarkier tone in recent weeks, courtesy, it would seem of a new writer at the keyboard," according to T'Cha Dunlevy of the MONTREAL GAZETTE. The team "posted a taunting tweet Monday morning in response to the controversy" over Bruins LW Brad Marchand’s "penchant for licking opponents’ faces, along with a jab at his team’s elimination from the playoffs." The tweet read, "Without naming names, just a reminder that licking is frowned upon on the golf course as well." Marchand responded, "Funny ... throwing shade when you were out of the playoff race since October.” During an April 28 Sharks-Golden Knights matchup, while awaiting the announcement of which teams would get the top picks in this year’s NHL Draft Lottery, the Canadiens tweeted, “We haven’t been this excited for 2nd intermission since that time Blue Man Group were performing at the Golden Knights Game.” The team also got into the "Star Wars-tinged spirit of May 4, tweeting Photoshopped pics of players dressed as characters from the movie series." But the tweet about Marchand "drew the most attention (2,900 likes, 933 retweets) along with an embarrassing amount of flack." The Canadiens have 1.52 million Twitter followers (MONTREAL GAZETTE, 5/10).
