Blue Jays Forced To Change Promotion Following Osuna Arrest

MLB has already launched its own investigation into the allegations against Osuna GETTY IMAGES

Blue Jays P Roberto Osuna was supposed to be featured on a "free T-shirt promotion" for tomorrow's game at Rogers Centre, but instead the club "made the quick decision" to feature 3B Yangervis Solarte after news surfaced that Osuna was charged with assaulting a female, according to Robert MacLeod of the GLOBE & MAIL. MLB "wasted no time reacting to the news, indefinitely suspending" Osuna. The league has "launched its own investigation into the allegations under its Domestic Violence, Sexual Assault and Child Abuse Policy" (GLOBE & MAIL, 5/9). In Toronto, Richard Griffin writes whatever the legal judgment becomes in a Toronto courtroom, fans can be sure that MLB will "hand out a suspension of its own under terms." It should be noted that the "designation of 'administrative leave' is designed to be in effect for up to seven days, so MLB has an opportunity to review the case with the Players Association, with the team’s front office and Toronto Police Services." Then, "without needing results of a trial, MLB can act because of a collective bargaining process agreed upon with the union." As much as fans "feel that the penalties from these off-field domestic violence incidents hurt their team’s chance of winning and competing, it is crucial that baseball continues to police itself with regard to treatment of women as society pushes to be vigilant and hopeful the pattern of abuse will change" (TORONTO STAR, 5/9).
