Maricopa County Exec Not Worried About D-Backs Leaving Chase Field

The deal keeps the D-back at Chase for five years and could result in a rebuild of the ballparkGetty Images

Maricopa County Board of Supervisors Chair Steve Chucri is not worried about the D-backs leaving Chase Field. The team is looking for a new ballpark as part of its deal with the county, which owns Chase Field. The pact settles a $185M fight over ballpark repairs. Chucri said the deal essentially keeps the team at Chase for five more years and could result in a rebuild of the 20-year-old park or its redevelopment into a new use. That might include another sports venue such as a soccer stadium or another commercial use, Chucri said. The county owns 25 acres that include the ballpark. “We’re handing over control. We’re not handing over ownership,” Chucri said of the deal, which has the team manage and oversee the ballpark. D-backs President & CEO Derrick Hall left the option of rebuilding Chase Field open an interview with KMVP-FM. Chucri agreed, saying, “We can co-develop or redevelop the site."
