Yankees Replace Support Poles For Safety Nets With Low-Profile Cables

The Yankees replaced support poles for extended netting at Yankee Stadium with a "steel cable that suspends the netting from above," because it "eliminates the obstruction created by 11 padded black poles," according to Wallace Matthews of the N.Y. TIMES. While few fans "criticized the netting itself" when the team unveiled the new feature, there "were complaints about the support poles that held up the eight-foot-high netting." Some said that the poles "obstructed their view of the field." Yankees COO Lonn Trost said that Managing Partner Hal Steinbrenner "objected to the poles when he visited the stadium just before the start of the season." The new cables were "installed during the Yankees’ seven-day trip to Boston and Detroit and were in place for the start of the 10-game homestand that concluded" Wednesday (N.Y. TIMES, 4/27).
