Caroline Wozniacki said that she may boycott the ATP/WTA Miami Open in '19 to "protest what she felt was an inadequate response by tournament officials to her complaint of verbal taunts by fans directed at her family in the stands last month," according to Michelle Kaufman of the MIAMI HERALD. Wozniacki said that fans in the crowd "hurled foul language and insults at her family during her second-round loss" to Monica Puig, a Miami native who was the "local fans’ favorite that night." She criticized Miami Open Tournament Dir James Blake’s "response to her claim." Wozniacki: "I have to make a decision where I feel I want to go back (to Miami) or not. I haven’t made that decision yet. I would have hoped that (James Blake) would have made a stance, but he didn’t and that’s that" (MIAMI HERALD, 4/20). In London, Simon Briggs noted the "ill-feeling left by the incident fits into a wider picture of unease between Wozniacki and IMG, the super-agency that runs the Miami Open." Wozniacki last year was "highly critical of the way the sport welcomed Maria Sharapova -- the highest-earning woman on IMG’s books -- back into the fold with wild cards and special dispensation."
