Report: NYCFC Proposes 26,000-Seat Stadium For Harlem River Yards

The stadium proposal includes a partnership paying $500,000 per year for a 99-year lease at the siteRAFAEL VINOLY ARCHITECTS

NYCFC reportedly is "proposing a 26,000-seat stadium as part of a larger Empire State Development Corporation plan" for a mixed-used development at the Harlem River Yards, according to Max Jaeger of the N.Y. POST. The $700M project "would include 550 affordable-housing units and a waterfront park." The stadium is "projected to cost" about $75M. Under the proposal, the partnership "would pay $500,000 per year for a 99-year ground lease at the site." NYCFC currently plays "about 2 miles away at Yankee Stadium." The group, which includes NYCFC, Stephen Ross' Related Companies and Somerset Partners, said that it "can finish the project" by '22 (N.Y. POST, 4/18). SOCCER AMERICA's Paul Kennedy noted NYCFC had "submitted a proposal to Empire State Development to develop a Queens site within the Belmont Park racetrack but lost out" to the Islanders. The Bronx location would be considered a "more attractive location" (SOCCERAMERICA.com, 4/17). The state said that the stadium pitch is "just one of a handful of submissions it is now reviewing." CRAIN'S N.Y. BUSINESS' Joe Anuta noted N.Y. Gov. Andrew Cuomo's administration could "either choose to field another round of proposals before awarding the project, or pick from what they have already received" (CRAINSNEWYORK.com, 4/17). N.Y. real estate and development blog YIMBY was first to report the news (THE DAILY).
