Int'l Champions Cup Boasts Plenty Of Big Matches In Sixth Edition

Int'l Champions Cup organizers unveiled the full schedule for the '18 soccer tournament, with 18 of the world's top clubs "set to play three games each in games across the U.S., Europe and Singapore" in games that begin shortly after the FIFA World Cup, according to ESPN.com. Highlights of this year's edition include an AS Roma-Real Madrid match at MetLife Stadium that "could be a rematch" of the UEFA Champions League final. Also, Manchester United's three games "could draw over 200,000 fans," and Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich "could test themselves against three other title-winners." The 107,600-capacity Michigan Stadium will host Manchester United-Liverpool on July 28 after hosting "over 109,000 people for United's game against Real Madrid" in '14, as well as last summer's Real Mardid-Chelsea match that drew "over 105,000" (ESPN.com, 4/17). One format change is that past tournaments "recognized a winner within each participating continent," whereas this year’s competitive structure "will take on a more cohesive format, reigning one overall global champion." Singapore is the only Asian country hosting ICC games in '18. Catalyst Media Group Chair & President Patrick Murphy said, “The support we witnessed in Singapore at the International Champions Cup last year was phenomenal" (GOAL.com, 4/17). ESPN.com offers its list of "six of the biggest games coming up this summer" as part of the tourney (ESPN.com, 4/17).
