Andrew Ference Hoping To Solve NHL's Accessibility Problem

Ference said if you play for elite teams in any sport, it's a very expensive propositionGETTY IMAGES

Former NHLer ANDREW FERENCE, who now works for the league, is "trying to solve the sport's perpetual dilemma" that hockey is "not always for everyone," according to Fluto Shinzawa of the BOSTON GLOBE. Ference, the NHL's Dir of Social Impact, Growth & Fan Development, said, "If you play for elite teams in any sport, it's a very expensive proposition." Shinzawa noted the NHL was "wise to identify Ference to work on this initiative," as the 39-year-old is a "dynamo" (BOSTON GLOBE, 4/8).

HOW THE TABLES HAVE TURNED: In N.Y., Dave Caldwell profiled NHL Senior VP/Player Safety GEORGE PARROS, an "intimidating player" who retired in '14 after amassing 1,092 penalty minutes. Parros, completing his first season at NHL HQ, has the "final say on league suspensions and fines for unsportsmanlike, illegal and even reckless play, but his work involves far more." Parros said, "We hope we maintain a safe environment for the players. We hope we can affect the game in a positive manner and keep it safe." He added, "This is an interesting job. I don't call it a fun job, because it's not fun to take guys off the ice and dock their pay and tell GM's and everybody else that they're being held out. But it is an interesting job. I'm enjoying it" (N.Y. TIMES, 4/8).
