Senators Fans Fund Billboards Calling For Melnyk To Sell Team

Billboards are slated to be up for two weeks, and a fifth will go up on April 2 for one weekOTTAWA SUN

Senators fans are protesting Eugene Melnyk's ownership of the team, as billboards with the message "#MelnykOut," went up in "four spots around Ottawa" yesterday, according to Tom Spears of the OTTAWA CITIZEN. Senators fan Spencer Callaghan raised "more than" C$10,000 in a GoFundMe effort. The billboards are "slated to be up for two weeks" and a fifth will "go up on April 2 for one week" (OTTAWA CITIZEN, 3/20). In Ottawa, Don Brennan notes fans "aren't going to chase" Melnyk out of town overnight "by putting up a few billboards." Brennan: "You’d like to think the '#MelnykOut' signs would embarrass the team owner/CEO/president into selling the Senators." However, the only thing fans "can hope for is that their cause leads to more attendance problems at Canadian Tire Centre." That is "what will hit Melnyk where it hurts," turn him "angry and drive him to some sort of action." At some point, somebody "should be able to appeal to Melnyk's senses." Selling the Senators "would set Melnyk up for life" (OTTAWA SUN, 3/20).
