Lillehammer Throws Hat In Ring For Future Winter Games

Lillehammer is planning a bid for either the '26 or '30 Winter Games that would also involve "several Norwegian cities," according to Norwegian press reports cited by Nick Zaccardi of NBCSPORTS.com. Lillihammer, which hosted the '94 Games, published a "feasibility study about a potential Winter Olympics bid last year." The city could share the bid with several other locations in Norway, including Oslo. Four cities -- Calgary; Sapporo, Japan; Sion, Switzerland; and Stockholm, Sweden -- have "entered the initial dialogue phase" for a potential '26 bid. Cities have until the end of the month to enter that phase, though actual bids "could hinge on public votes." Oslo withdrew its bid for the '22 Games "after Norway's government voted not to financially back it." IOC President Thomas Bach has indicated that he "hopes the Winter Olympics can return to a more traditional location" after last month's Pyeongchang Games and the '22 Games set for Beijing (NBCSPORTS.com, 3/9).
