Clippers Looking To Roll Out AI-Influenced Broadcasts Next Fall

Clippers President of Business Operations Gillian Zucker noted the team and broadcast partner Prime Ticket next season are prepping a new way to "experience the game" while watching it. Zucker appeared on "Bloomberg Business of Sport" and noted the franchise has been working "for the better part of three years" on team Owner Steve Ballmer's "vision." She said this will be more than "taking the broadcast product as it exists today and just delivering it in a different way so that you can watch it on your phone or on your computer." Zucker said of Ballmer, "He wants to know information about stats or what’s the likelihood that that shot is going to be made with that defender in that particular position. Through his understanding of technology, we’ve been able to identify a company that is able to take an artificial intelligence and its ability to analyze the game from a computer point of view and create overlays, or augmented reality, over the broadcast product." The technology will allow viewers to "watch the game in a different way." Zucker: "People who are used to watching a game where they follow the ball, when you watch it with these overlays, all of a sudden you find that your eye isn’t being drawn to a defender who then creates an open shot. Instead you’re watching how a play develops" ("Bloomberg Business of Sport," BLOOMBERG.com, 3/8)
