Minding My Business With PGA Tour Superstore CMO Matt Corey

Corey is excited for how advancements in technology will continue to the average golfer's gameCOURTESY MATT COREY

Name: Matt Corey

Position: PGA Tour Superstore CMO

Where I’m from: Atlanta

Where I call home: Atlanta

Focusing on right now:  We’re gearing up for our entire spring campaign, which starts mid-March. This spring we’ve partnered with Adidas and SERGIO GARCIA. He’s going to be our featured athlete in our spring campaign. We’re going through all the media planning and creative and getting ready to push everything out here in just a few weeks.

Best advice: The 10 Year Rule: If the thing that is stressing you out, if you’re going to remember it 10 years from now, it might be worth a little bit of focus. But if you’re not going to remember it 10 years from now, then take a deep breath and get through it.

A must for a new hire: Three things: one is energy, second is passion and third is attitude. If they’ve got a great attitude, if they are high energy and if they’re really passionate, they’re going to do really well. You can’t teach those things.

First thing in the morning: I work out, I do something cardio-related just to get my heart going and get my day going. I love sleep so it’s hard for me to do sometimes, but I try to get up and run on the treadmill or do something like that. I just feel like it wakes me up better and puts me in a great frame of mind.

Must-have music: If I’m working out, I need something that’s upbeat, it keeps me moving. But then when you’re on the golf course with your buddies and you’re playing a playlist on your bluetooth speaker you might throw it back to all the fun rock ‘n roll songs from the ’80s with AEROSMTIH and others.

Best book I’ve read this year: “THE BLACK BOX” by MICHAEL CONNELLY.

Talking tech: The ability for technology to help in golf is really amazing. I think the next evolution will be that one day on our cellphones we will all have little personal caddies. You’ll walk up to a shot and you pull out your 8-iron and your phone will tell you to hit your 7 instead. There’s going to be technology in the equipment, the phone’s going to know where you are on the golf course, its going to know the weather condition, it’s going to know enough about your game to tell you what club to use.

Food for thought: I’m a big seafood guy -- I could eat it every day no matter what. Atlanta’s got so many great restaurants it seems like we discover new places all the time.

How I unwind: I play a lot more tennis than I do golf. I don’t think there’s anything better than just ripping a forehand cross-court. That’s my fun physical activity. That helps every part of my life.

Day in the life: My normal day is a combination of planning major campaigns and working on our e-commerce platform migration -- we’re moving to a whole new platform so that’s a big project this year. One of the most important things I’m trying to do more of is to do something every day where I feel like I’m really moving the needle, I’m going to finish some project or inspire someone on the team to be a better leader and I’m going to make an impact today versus just checking the box.
