College Hoops Survey: 47 Coaches Earning Over $2M For '17-18

A salary survey for men's basketball coaches in the power conferences, as well as teams in other conferences that have participated in the NCAA Tournament at least three of the past five seasons, found that 47 coaches are "making more than" $2M this season and 14 are making more than $3M, according to Brady, Berkowitz & Schnaars of USA TODAY. The "top five earners this year" are Duke’s Mike Krzyzewski, Kentucky’s John Calipari, Ohio State’s Chris Holtmann, Kansas’ Bill Self and Michigan State’s Tom Izzo. This is "good, old-fashioned American capitalism, where everyone’s entitled to whatever the market will bear" (USA TODAY, 3/1). ESPN's Michael Smith said the release of the salaries is "timely ... as the debate continues over not paying college players." Smith: "You can't pay them, but you can pay 14 coaches at least $3 million for 2017-18" ("SportsCenter," ESPN, 2/28).
