Oak View Group Releases Updated KeyArena Renovation Plans

Oak View Group yesterday released updated renderings of its planned $600M renovation of KeyArena, showing features the company says will “preserve the historic nature of the site” and the surrounding areas of Seattle Center, according to Geoff Baker of the SEATTLE TIMES. The designs include "new views of an external 360-foot-long glass atrium that will allow spectators to view the iconic Paul Thiry-designed roof when approaching from a distance." The roof itself "protrudes out beyond the edges of the atrium, which was deliberately shortened so the edges of the roof will be visible." Renderings also show "views from the new Space Needle Club in the venue’s upper level, where the city’s landmark tower can be seen through an interior glass skylight while patrons watch action on the ice below." The designs, by Populous, also "feature widened concourses and a view of the interior ice rink from a seating perspective." Populous Associate Principal Geoff Cheong said the 17,000-seat hockey interior depicts “a very intimate seating bowl” as well as hospitality environments and video displays. He added, “When they come into this arena for the first time, it is going to look and feel completely different from what they are used to" (SEATTLE TIMES, 2/27). The AP's Tim Booth reported the "aggressive timeline" for the renovation of the arena "remains on schedule with the hope of breaking ground on construction by the end of the year." OVG Dir of Operations Steve Mattson said that the goal "remains to have approval to take control of the arena at Seattle Center by late fall and begin the construction process" before the end of '18. Mattson: “Every day we move them along a little bit and we feel really good about where we’re at right now" (AP, 2/26).
