MLBAM Ready To Make First Venture Into VR-Based Video Gaming

MLBAM this spring will release to consumers a VR version of its five-year-old Home Run Derby video game, a move that expands upon commercial installations of the game at last year’s MLB FanFest in Miami, Petco Park in San Diego and at several offseason team FanFests this winter. The home version of Home Run Derby VR will be available on the PlayStation VR and HTC Vive platforms. A specific release date and pricing have not yet been finalized. The game marks MLBAM’s first entry into VR-based video gaming for a broad consumer market and follows NBA 2KVR in a still-nascent market for licensed sports titles in the format. “This has been driven a lot by the consumer adoption we’re now seeing, particularly for PlayStation VR, and the fan reaction we’ve received to the game,” said MLBAM VP/Games & VR Strategy Jamie Leece. “Everywhere we’ve gone with this, the consumer response has been really strong, so we’re hopeful about what this can do.” The consumer version of Home Run Derby VR will feature depictions of Marlins Park, Nationals Park and Progressive Field, MLB’s All-Star Game venues for ’17-19. A demo will be shown this weekend at the Sloan MIT Sports Analytics Conference in Boston. More than 10 MLB clubs, meanwhile, are expected to join the Padres this season with ballpark-based installations of the game.
