Minnesota Vikings Got Creative On Snapchat With ‘Skol Skribbles’

The NFL is expanding its presence on Snapchat.

The Minnesota Vikings finished the 2017 season with their best record since 1998. Naturally, with success there comes exciting, shareable moments. None of those moments were bigger than the “Minneapolis Miracle” — a mind-boggling, last-second touchdown catch by Stefon Diggs which propelled the Vikings to the NFC championship game.

Prior to cementing his status as a Minnesota legend, Diggs was immortalized by “Skol Skribbles,” a Snapchat-based social media campaign where various players have their team photos transformed to fit their nickname. For example, the Vikings’ shutdown cornerback, Xavier Rhodes, is known by “Rhodes Closed.” Evan Garber, a Snapchat influencer, takes these names and creates Snapchat magic with his drawings.

“This is a unique process because it’s taking an idea conceived by fans, coming up with a creative way to enhance it with art and save each step of the drawing along the way so I can create a video showcasing the full transformation,” Garber said in a statement. “In the end, it gives the fans a fun and new way to look at their favorite players as well as drawings not usually seen on this social media platform that they can share with friends!”

The images were shared on a weekly basis via the Vikings’ Snapchat. Fans are invited to attempt their own design which then has a chance to be shared on the team’s Snapchat story.

Not only have the Vikings introduced drawing creations, but also they’ve developed some unique Snapchat stickers as well.

We’ve been doing Snapchat stickers throughout the season,” Scott Kegley, Vikings Executive Director of Digital Media and Innovation, said on the SportTechie podcast. “We’ll post some of those stickers, and then you can cut them out and use them on your own stories. We use them on our Snapchat Stories throughout the year.”

The team reported that roughly 35,000 people viewed the Skol Skribbles campaign each week.
