Associated Press Partners With Arkadium For AI-Generated Visual Content

An example of Arkadium’s AI-powered interactive data visualizations

The Associated Press continues to incorporate automation into its global sports coverage by partnering with Arkadium on the use of its InHabit artificial intelligence tool to generate interactive content into pro and college football and college basketball stories.

Arkadium’s patent-pending technology will ingest articles on AP’s news wire and incorporate an interactive data visualization, or what the New York-based company calls a “ƒactive.” The insertion will be a joint product of Arkadium’s AI tool scanning large data sets for appropriate statistics and the in-house editorial team. Arkadium already collaborates with such wide-ranging editorial brands as Time, Inc., Gannett and Tronc.

“We’re extremely excited to start working with The Associated Press,” Arkadium CEO Jessica Rovello said in a press release. “Our tools were designed to help digital publishers like the AP to drive and retain readership through engaging, interactive content. The AP has consistently proven that its foresight about the benefits of AI in the newsroom has allowed it to thrive in an increasingly competitive and saturated market. We’re proud to now be a part of that evolution.”

The AP has previously contracted with Automated Insights on computer-written game recaps for minor league baseball and some college sports, as well as utilizing the crowdsourcing tool ScoreStream for faster reporting of amateur scores. The wire service already provides a large number of Digital News Experiences, or DNE, with the aim of bolstering reader engagement and publisher revenue.

“The InHabit tool presents a unique opportunity for our members and customers to increase engagement around AP sports content,” said Fernando Ferre, AP vice president of business development. “Arkadium’s data-based automated interactive content aligns nicely with the multiformat stories already available through our DNEs.”
