NBC NHL Analyst Pierre McGuire Has Prostate Cancer, Will Return For Pyeongchang Games

NBC's Pierre McGuire has been "diagnosed with prostate cancer," but the NHL analyst "expects to return" in time to call next month's Pyeongchang Games, according to Kevin Allen of USA TODAY. NBC made the announcement last night prior to its coverage of Wild-Blackhawks. McGuire said that his doctor noted an "irregularity during his PSA screening during his yearly physical ... and subsequent tests revealed a cancerous lesion." McGuire had the tumor removed last week. Doctors "determined McGuire has stage 1 cancer, and no chemotherapy is currently planned." McGuire said that one reason he "pushed to have the surgery quickly was to give him the opportunity to be ready" for Pyeongchang. McGuire's diagnosis comes five months after fellow NBC NHL analyst Ed Olczyk was "diagnosed with colon cancer" (USA TODAY, 1/11).

NAMES FINALIZED: NBC yesterday announced its team of NHL commentators for Pyeongchang, as Kenny Albert and Gord Miller will provide play-by-play commentary for the men's tournament and Mike Milbury will serve as the booth analyst. McGuire and Brian Boucher will serve as ice-level analysts. Kathryn Tappen, Jeremy Roenick and Keith Jones will handle studio work (NBC). Mike Emrick will call the three Sunday NHL telecasts NBC "recently added ... to its schedule" while the Pyeongchang Games are taking place (Albany TIMES UNION, 1/11).
