Minding My Business With Rebel Ventures CEO Craig Howe

Name: Craig Howe

Position: Rebel Ventures CEO (L.A.-based digital media consultancy)

Where I’m from: Golden, Colo.

Where I call home: Madrid, Spain

Focusing on right now: This year is going to be an insanely busy year for us because we have things to do for the Pyeongchang Games coming up next month, the World Cup in Russia this summer and the 50th anniversary of the U.S. Open in terms of digital strategy. We also do a ton of NBA work for the Warriors, Bulls and Hawks.

Best advice
: Focus on always continuing to learn from your experiences and do great work, and if you do that, good things will tend to follow.

People I admire: There are two buckets: People that I read about and don’t really know, such as Starbucks Exec Chair and former Supersonics Owner HOWARD SCHULTZ. I really admire how he always protects his principles, I have a lot of respect for that. In terms of people that I have worked with, Bulls President & COO MICHAEL REINSDORF is someone I have great respect for because of his unwavering dedication to the city of Chicago.

Must have for a new hire: Passion, curiosity, humility and humor. I consider myself to be pretty unfunny so I always like to surround myself with people with a good sense of humor.

Book shelf: I just recently finished reading “When Breath Becomes Air” by PAUL KALANITHI. He was a neurosurgeon who performed some of the really intense and difficult operations on cancer patients, and he was then diagnosed with stage IV lung cancer at the age of 36. He wrote the book as he was dying as a memoir about his life and illness. It is so unbelievably enlightening because it really shows you the value of life and the people around you. My favorite book of ’17 was “The Four: The Hidden DNA Of Amazon, Apple, Facebook And Google."

Must-have music: I really only need two artists on repeat: KINGS OF LEON and KENDRICK LAMAR. I was disappointed I wasn’t able to watch Kendrick Lamar’s performance at halftime of the CFP title game.

First thing in the morning: I really wish I didn’t do this, but check my phone. After that I usually wake up my kids and pet my dog, in that exact order each day. I’ll also usually find time to hang out with my wife when I have the chance.

Taking tech: I am really obsessed right now with augmented reality and what it can do for the sports industry. I’m especially interested with what the iPhone has done with AR capabilities, and the new one coming out next year is supposed to have rear-facing AR capabilities so that will be really neat.

Food for thought: I just spent three weeks in Italy, so pretty much any food from anywhere in the country is good with me. I also really like Cookshop whenever I’m at our N.Y. offices.

How I unwind: One thing that has been a big challenge since moving to Spain is that I didn’t know how to speak the language before I got here. Sometimes communication is a challenge and so I’ll work out with my trainer, who doesn’t speak English, and it’s a good way to stay in shape and also work on my Spanish at the same time. That really helps me unwind more than anything and it’s always nice to kill two birds with one stone.

Day in the life: There are two parts to my work day. We have a global client base and with me living in Europe, most of my mornings are dedicated to our European clients and the work we have to do for them. Living in Spain, I get that nice 2 1/2 hour lunch so I’ll usually eat and then work out. In the afternoon, I’ll do more European client work, but around 4:00-5:00 pm I switch to U.S. client mode. I usually end up working a little later into the evening just to make sure everything’s running smooth. Afterwards if I’m lucky, I’ll get in some Netflix or read a book and then be in bed by midnight to start it all over again.
