Spain’s eDroneCup Pits Drone Pilots Against Gamers

Gamergy, an electronic sports event held annually in Spain, welcomed a new competition to this year’s slate. For the first time ever, real drone racers squared off with esports gamers in the eDroneCup.

Over Dec. 15-17, up to 150 of Spain’s greatest drone pilots participated. Organized by the MEDIAPRO Group, gamer drone pilots and pro drone pilots and racers alike competed via virtual simulators and used official drone racing rules. Neither the drone pilots or gamers knew the layout of the map beforehand.

The goal of the event was to promote the world of drone simulators within esports and help in connecting the two sides. The tournament featureed support from Rotor Rush, a company specializing in simulators and drone races.

Over the three-day period, the field was whittled down to the six fastest pilots who battled for a 3,000-euro jackpot prize. Èric Arguijo, aka “EAM5892,” became the first-ever champion of the eDroneCup and took home € 1,000.

Those who attended the event were able to test their skills on simulators as well as meet some of the professional pilots. Pilots even shared some tips and tricks with those on hand.
