Cards Against Humanity Jokingly Claims Ballpark Rights As Part Of Marketing Campaign

Cards Against Humanity made Joliet, Ill., part of its "satirical holiday promotional campaign" last Thursday with a "phony claim to have purchased naming rights for the city's baseball stadium," according to Bob Okon of the Joliet HERALD-NEWS. On its website, the Chicago-based card game company said, "We purchased the naming rights to a minor league baseball stadium in Joliet, Illinois." Thursday was the "last day of its 'Cards Against America Saves America' campaign." Independent Frontier League Joliet Slammers President Nick Semaca said that Cards Against Humanity "didn't" buy naming rights. But Semaca was "constrained at times about what he could say given a confidentiality agreement the Slammers have with Cards Against Humanity." While the company "did not buy the naming rights that the Slammers have been trying to sell for 16 months," Cards Against Humanity did "provide the Slammers lots of publicity and gave followers of the promotional campaign vouchers that can be used to attend games" in '18. Curiosity has been "brewing since a banner was hung at the stadium's front gate on Dec. 5 with the words 'The Cards Against Humanity Baseball Place.'" Semaca said, "This will help us secure a naming rights partner. We actually have a new outreach plan for right after the holidays because we expect to get a ton of positive buzz from this" (Joliet HERALD-NEWS, 12/22).
