MLB Distributes $84.5M In Playoff Player Compensation, Setting Another Record

MLB distributed $84.5M in postseason player compensation, up 10% from last year and another league record. The money, generated from 50% of the gate receipts from the Wild Card games and 60% from the first three games of each LDS and first four games of each LCS and World Series, is largely a function of the ballpark capacities of the participating teams and ticket prices. As a result, the long playoff run by the Dodgers, playing in MLB’s largest ballpark, in particular helped enlarge the pool. This year’s overall compensation pool breaks last year’s mark of $76.6M and represents the fourth time in six seasons a new record has been set. The pool has grown 21% in the last two years. The World Series champion Astros divided their league record $30.4M portion of the postseason pool into 60 full shares of $438,901.57 each, 9.23 partial shares and four cash awards. Postseason distributions were again given to each of the 10 playoff teams.
