UTSA Introduces Lisa Campos, Who Joins Small Contingent Of Hispanic Female ADs

UTSA on Friday introduced Lisa Campos as its new AD, where she will "oversee the university's 17 sports and a budget" of $28M, according to John Whisler of the SAN ANTONIO EXPRESS-NEWS. Campos is the "fifth person to hold the post" and "officially begins her duties on Jan. 15." Campos: "This felt like the right fit at the right time." Campos "signed a five-year contract with an annual salary of $375,000 to become one of fewer than 40" female ADs -- and "just three Hispanic female ADs" -- among the 350-plus D-I schools in the nation. Campos "replaces Lynn Hickey, who stepped down Sept. 7 after 18 years." Hickey "earned $245,000 annually at the time of her resignation." Campos "spent the past five years" as Northern Arizona VP/Athletics. New UTSA President Taylor Eighmy "cited Campos' strategic approach to improvement at Northern Arizona, including her creativity in increasing ticket sales, donations and sponsorships, as a key factor in her hiring." Eighmy: "By all measures, she's a star on the rise" (SAN ANTONIO NEW-EXPRESS, 11/18).

HARK THE SOUND: In Raleigh, Jane Stancill reported North Carolina AD Bubba Cunningham "has a new annual salary of $740,440," reflecting a 4.9% pay bump, as part of a six-year contract extension approved by the UNC BOT on Nov. 1. In addition to the salary, Cunningham "will receive $200,000 a year in deferred compensation payments for the next five years, a provision that was approved in early November." He also has the "possibility of receiving incentive bonuses, including payments equaling one month’s salary if the football team goes to a bowl game and the men’s and women’s basketball teams go to the NCAA tournament." Cunningham would be "eligible for $20,000 if the university finishes in the top 25 nationally of Director’s Cup athletic standings and double that amount if UNC ranks in the top 10 nationally" (NEWSOBSERVER.com, 11/17).
